Dorset Bird Club
Dorset Bird Club
Website: www.dorsetbirds.co.uk
Dorset's bird life is amongst the best in the UK. With a list of over 410 species, the county is well placed in the top ten of the UK's 'league table' of county totals and second only to Norfolk for the highest number of species recorded in a single day. Although Dorset's birding hotspots are located along the coast, interesting birds are to be found throughout the county.
Dorset offers a variety of habitats which include extensive areas of internationally important lowland heath, reed beds, inter-tidal habitats, woodlands, chalk grassland, rivers and sea cliffs. Many of the top birding sites are set amongst stunning landscapes, whilst others can be found on the edge of, or even in, urban conurbations. However, they all attract an interesting variety of species, with rarities frequently turning up.
The Dorset Bird Club was formed in March 1987 taking over from the Dorset Natural History & Archaeological Society as the publisher of the annual Dorset Bird Report. In 2004 the Club provided financial assistance to publish the latest county avifauna, ‘The Birds of Dorset’, by George Green (Helm).
Membership is open to anyone with an interest in Dorset’s birds and currently stands at just over 400 members.
Our main roles are to:
- promote the interest of birds and bird watching in Dorset;
- collate Dorset bird records, producing the annual Dorset Bird Report;
- provide comment and support on local conservation issues;
- promote small scale local projects through the Conservation Fund; and
- initiate, and encourage participation in, local/national bird surveys.
To help achieve our roles, we:
- publish the annual Dorset Bird Report;
- maintain a database of bird records (with the Dorset Environmental Records Centre);
- produce a Newsletter for members three times a year; and
- offer a programme of guided walks and occasional indoor meetings.
