Jasper

Jasper has been named by Debbie and David Stratford, in memory of dear friends they have lost through cancer; the name includes their initials. They said: “Jasper the cuckoo needs all the support he can get and it will be lovely to think of our friends flying up high, helping to keep him safe on his long journeys.”

Jasper 's movements

11 Aug 2023 - The end of the road for Jasper

Sadly it appears that we have heard the last from Suffolk Cuckoo Jasper. When we last heard from him he was in the countryside west of Saint-Julien-du-Sault in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in north-central France. We can't be certain what has happened to him, but our suspicion is that he has perished in that area. We are of course sad that Jasper's journey was a relatively short one but he has added valuable information to our growing knowledge of the pressures faced by our Cuckoos, and importantly, information about where they are dying.

14 Jul 2023 - Jasper moves south

Over the last couple of days Jasper has moved south and is now in the countryside west of Saint-Julien-du-Sault in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in north-central France.

07 Jul 2023 - Restless Jasper moves south again

Having flown 50 km (31 miles) north to Nangis in the Île-de-France region, Jasper has since flown 37 km (23 miles) south again.

He is now close to the town of Vallery in the Yonne department in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in north-central France.

05 Jul 2023 - Jasper turns north

Since our last update, Jasper has retraced part of his journey south, flying 132 km (82 miles) north to his new location close to La Belliole in the Yonne department in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté in north-central France.

03 Jul 2023 - Cuckoo Jasper sets off

Cuckoo Jasper has left his breeding grounds in the King’s Forest, Suffolk and flown 630 km (391 miles) south, across the English Channel and into France.

By the early hours of this morning (Monday 3 June) Jasper was close to the village of Rouy, in the Nièvre department of central-east France.
