West Midland Bird Club
West Midland Bird Club was founded in 1929, when it was known as the Birmingham Bird Club. It became the West Midland Bird Club thirty years later, in 1959. Today it is one of the largest bird clubs in the country and has circa 1,800 members.
The Club has produced an Annual Report since 1934, (83 reports) covering the counties of Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Staffordshire and the West Midlands. As well as the report, the Club has produced quite a few publications, including the prestigious ‘Birds of the West Midlands, and New Birds of the West Midlands’, by Graham And Janet Harrison.
The Club also publishes WMBC News four times a year which has local bird sightings, articles, information about field and indoor meetings and ringing notes. The Club takes part in extensive ringing on our reserves; Belvide and Blithfield reservoirs in Staffordshire, Ladywalk in Warwickshire and Harborne in the West Midlands.
WMBC does not own these reserves but has agreements with the owners to manage them and members have access to them. Despite being about as far away from the sea as you can get, the region has produced some startling records, not least being that of Puffins, recorded in Warks, Worcs and Staffs in 1963. More recently, Cattle Egret and White-rumped Sandpiper have occurred. This year the Club celebrates 90 years of studying, recording and reporting birds of the West Midland Region.
